Developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilaytes MEthod is a form of body/mind fitness and conditioning. He created this methodology as a means of strengthening his own frail and sickly body. During World War I, Pilates continued to refine his technique to assist in the rehabilitation of hospital patients wounded during the war.
Orininally, the Pilates Method was a favorite form of conditioning for the strong, lithe bodies of dancers, However, in recent years, Pilates has become a popular form of training among other athletes, as well as the general public. Anyone who incorporates Pilates into their training regimen will soon discover the benefits of having a strong and stable "Powerhouse".
The Pilates method has been influenced by many different forms of fitness, including yoga. Unique to Pilates is its ruling principles of:
CONCENTRATION - linking the mind and body CONTROL - to avoid injury and produce positive results CORE/POWERHOUSE - consists of abdominals, lower back, hips & buttocks FLUIDITY - focus is on grace of motion rather than speed PRECISION - vital to every movement so as to fulfill its intended purpose BREATH - will help you move more efficiently and effectively
Pilates can be practiced on mats in a classroom setting or in a private session with the apparatus--elements unique to the Pilates methodology. While mat classes are strong and invigorating, private sessions are more personalized and will help you get in touch with specific core muscles.
To enhance and fine-tune your mat practice, try periodic private sessions. In addition, private sessions are ideal for those who may be recovering from injuries. New moms are thrilled to see how quickly private sessions can help recondition parts of the body that were most affected by their pregnancy. Personalized private sessions on the apparatus are fun and challenging and will fully engage your body/mind awareness.
